Best Time to Visit California

When to go for perfect weather, low crowds & great deals

California has no single "best" season — it depends entirely on where you're going and what you want to do. This guide breaks down the weather, crowds, and costs month by month so you can find the ideal time for your California trip.

Spring (March–May) — Best Overall

Spring is arguably the best time to visit most of California. Wildflowers bloom across the desert and hills, temperatures are mild, crowds are smaller than summer, and hotel prices are lower. It's the peak season for Yosemite waterfalls (snowmelt) and desert wildflowers.

Summer (June–August) — Peak Season

Summer is California's busiest and most expensive season. Beach towns are packed, Yosemite requires advance reservations, and prices are at their highest. That said, the weather is reliably sunny everywhere, and it's the perfect time for beach trips. Book everything 2–3 months ahead.

Fall (September–October) — Hidden Gem Season

Fall is California's secret best season. Summer crowds disappear, temperatures remain warm, Napa Valley is in harvest season, and prices drop significantly. October is particularly ideal — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and fewer tourists everywhere.

Winter (November–February) — Bargain Season

Winter is low season for most of California except ski resorts. Southern California stays mild (65–75°F), making it pleasant year-round. SF and NorCal get rain. Hotel prices are at their lowest. Christmas and New Year's are busy; early January through February are the quietest weeks.

Regional Differences

LA & San Diego: Year-round sunshine, summer is busy but never uncomfortable. San Francisco: Summer is actually foggy and cool — September–October is better. Yosemite: Spring for waterfalls, summer for hiking, fall for colors. Desert (Palm Springs, Joshua Tree): November–April is ideal; summers are brutally hot (110°F+).
