Getting Around California
Car rental, public transport, flights & more
California is a massive state — understanding your transport options is key to planning a smooth trip. From renting a car (almost always recommended) to navigating LA's metro and SF's BART, this guide covers every way to get around the Golden State.
Renting a Car
A rental car is the best way to explore California, especially outside major cities. Book in advance through comparison sites for the best rates ($35–$80/day for a compact). Get full coverage insurance if your credit card doesn't include it. Note: downtown parking in LA and SF can add $25–$45/day to your costs.
Los Angeles Public Transit
LA has a surprisingly extensive Metro system covering most major attractions. A TAP card costs $2 per ride or $7/day unlimited. However, the city's sprawl means a car is often more practical, especially for beach areas and outlying neighborhoods.
San Francisco Public Transit
SF is one of the most walkable and transit-friendly cities in the US. BART connects SFO airport to downtown for $10. Muni buses and cable cars cover the whole city. A Clipper card (reusable transit card) is the most convenient option. Parking is expensive and difficult.
Amtrak & Intercity Trains
The Pacific Surfliner runs between San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara — a scenic coastal route. The Coast Starlight runs from LA to Seattle via the Central Valley. Train travel is slower than flying but scenic and relaxing. Book in advance for the best fares.
Flying Within California
With Southwest and other budget carriers, intra-California flights can be cheap (LA to SF from $49 one-way). Main airports: LAX (Los Angeles), SFO/OAK (San Francisco), SAN (San Diego), SJC (San Jose), SMF (Sacramento). Security lines at LAX are notoriously long — allow 90 minutes.
